He attended the public schools of his twp. where he was taught by George Weber who instructed him in addition to the usual branches in mensuration, geometry, trigonometry and surveying. Later he attended Freeland Seminary and North Wales Academy. After teaching school for several years in Worcester and Gwynedd twps. he took up farming as his occupation. He, however, was a public spirited citizen of many interests and devoted much of his time to the upbuilding and advancement of his community. He was particularly interested in education and served for 27 years as a school director of Worcester Twp., acting as the President of the board for about 15 years. He also helped to organize Perkiomen Seminary at Pennsburg which was taken over by the Schwenkfelder church in 1892, acting as a trustee the rest of his life.
As a farmer he believed in united action as the only way that farmers could either sell or buy their commodities satisfactorily. He helped to organize the ‘‘Farmers’ Creamery Association” of Worcester and the Worcester “‘Farmers’ Union,’’ and served as president of both associations for many years.
He also took an active interest in financial and political affairs. When the North Wales Bank was organized he became a charter member of the board and served as long as he lived. Asa protest against the Quay régime in 1900, he consented to become a candidate of the independents for the State Assembly, but failed of election.
He was a life long and active member of the Schwenkfelder church, serving it as Secretary of the General Conference and as superintendent of the primary department of the Towamencin Sunday school for many years.
He died March 21st, 1915, aged 72 years, 5 months, and 10 days and was buried in the Towamencin Schw. Cem.
