After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Schilling spent a year at the Washington Missionary College, Takoma, where Mr. Schilling was pursuing a ministerial course. The outbreak of the war changed their plans, and Mr. Schilling was drafted into the U. S. Army, July, 1918. Because of his religious con-
vietions he refused to perform manual labor on the seventh day, as a result of which he was sentenced at Camp Sherman for a period of twenty-five years at hard labor at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. An appeal to the War Department brought investigation and he was released after serving part of his sentence.
