Josiah Kriebel Gerhard was born in Upper Hanover Twp., Montgomery Co., Pa. After attending the publie schools of his native twp., he became a student at the Academic Institute at Trappe, Pa., conducted by the late Prof. Abel Rambo [74-306], and also at the West Chester (Pa.) State Normal School. He taught several terms of school both in Upper Hanover and Worcester Twps., Pa.
While engaged in teaching, Mr. Gerhard started to study medicine with the late Dr. George K. Meschter [66-14], after which he entered the Medical Department of the University of Penna., from which he was graduated in 1882. He immediately formed a partnership with his former preceptor, and they together built up a large and lucrative practice; this partnership continued until the untimely death of Dr. Gerhard, which occurred on April 16, 1886, after a two weeks’ illness of typhoid pneumonia. Being an exceedingly industrious and conscientious practitioner, Dr. Gerhard was very successful in his short professional career, and had many warm friends.
