CHRISTOPH REINWALD [E 44] and his DESCENDANTS

[44] CHRISTOPH REINWALD [E 44], b 1703 in Silesia; d Jan. 14, 1770; s Melchior. He came to Pa. in 1734, with the group of immigrants. On Nov. 1, 1734, he was married to SUSANNA SEIBT [E 124], by written marriage contract [q. v.]. Witnesses signing contract were: Melchior Kribel, George Reinwald, David Seibt and George Weiss; this contract was executed in Phila. and is preserved in S. H. L. This is the only written marriage contract that has been discovered, but doubtless others were executed during the first few months after the migration, before the Schwenkfelders elected a regular minister. The name of Susanna Seibt appears on the Immigrant List as Susanna Reinwald

[E 124] [q. v.].

SUSANNA SEIBT was the dau of Hans Christoph Seibt of Silesia [cf. Letter in S. H. L., Mar.

1749]; she d July 23, 1749. Christoph Reinwald was naturalized, June 21, 1743. He lived in Towamencin Twp. on land owned, in part (1920), by Rev. Edwin S. Anders [Plate F XIX]. Both Christoph Reinwald and wife Susanna are buried in Towamencin Schw. Cem.

Christopher Reinwald died so suddenly that in a quarter of an hour after he was stricken he was dead [Letter C. S. to Heintze, 1770].

Christopher Reinwald was a brother to Judith Reinwald, wife of David Seibt [E 59]; and also to

Barbara Reinwald [E 125], who came to Pa. in 1734, and who probably lived with him, and who died, Aug. 24, 1775, aged 85 years. She is buried in Towamencin Cem.

MARRIAGE CONTRACT

In the name of the triune God

Inasmuch as for some time past as is well known, the worthy and industrious bachelor, Christoph Reinwald, son of the late Melchior Reinwald, has paid court to Susanna Seibt, legitimate daughter of Hans Christoph Seibt, with the intention of being united to her in marriage which was also her will and inclination in consequence of which they some time since mutually pledged to each other before God love and fidelity, honor and uprightness, and neither in joy or sorrow to forsake each other. But since on account of the many hindrances and many well known disturbances in

Silesia, the customary priestly copulation could not be secured, neither have regulations been established among us since their plight so that they might be publicly united and pledged to each other and they desire to have the matter properly adjusted in order that they may not be the occasion of offence, suspicion or scandal to any one.

To this end, therefore, today, November 1, old style, was selected and appointed and a few witnesses chosen by each of them in whose presence they have publicly pledged themselves and promised to each other love and fidelity, honor and uprightness, neither in joy or sorrow to forsake each other and to conduct themselves before God and man as Christian husband and wife and solemnly confirmed, corroborated and made binding the same by the joining of their right hands.

In testimony that this was really and truly performed to the end that in the eyes of all each may be held above suspicion and that the same may be the more fully confirmed and established we, the chosen witnesses as before stated, have subscribed our names, namely:

Christopher Reinewald was a farmer and lived in Towamencin Twp., near Kulpsville, Pa.

Tradition says David Reinewald had a fine coat which he prized highly and which, for fear of being stolen during the encampment of the Revolutionary soldiers in Towamencin, he hid under the bushes along the Towamencin Creek, and brought it from its hiding-place again after the soldiers left. Rosina Reinewald had a son, John Mitchell, born 1806. William Springer has in his possession an indenture between Rosanna Reinewald, Spinster, and Emanuel Schwartz, binding John Mitchell out to learn a trade; dated, June 6, 1811, aged 5 years, 8 months. John Mitchell died July 20, 1829; he and his mother are buried in the Mennonite Cem., Kulpsville, Pa.

In the census of 1790, David Reinewald's name is also given as "Davis Rinewalt." His family consisted of 4 males over 16, including head of family; 1 male under 16 and 4 females.

On Feb. 26, 1801, Jacob Beary and Mary, ux., granted and conveyed to "David Rinewalt, Sr." and "David Rinewalt, Jr." a messuage or tract of 27 A, 126 P, in Coventry Twp., Pa. On Jan. 2, 1819, David, Jr., Joseph et ux., Adam et ux., Daniel Benner et ux., Jacob Beale et ux., and Susanna, deeded the same land to Henry Saybold, for $1290.25. The widow released her dower, Jan. 9, 1819, and the two sons of Jacob released, Mar. 14, 1837. [Cf. D. B. 0486-31. Wanger.]

On Mar. 30, 1820, Henry Shenkle deeded to David Rinewalt, mason, 7 A, 104 P, who sold the same to Jacob Beale, May 12, 1823, for $162.50. [Wanger.]

On Mar. 31, 1852, Joseph Reinwalt [44-26] took out letters of administration in the estate of Susanna Reinewald. Collateral inheritance tax was paid, hence no direct heirs.

One child: Anna.

John Garner was evidently married twice, his first wife being a Mary Lewis who died about 1800. In 1773 and again 1783 Mary Garner joined with her husband, John Garner, in deeds of land con­veyances. In the year 1802 no wife joined John Garner, and in the year 1810 Rachel joined him in deeds. This leads one to believe that Mary Lewis Garner died about 1800. From court records we also learn that John Garner had nine children: (1) Catharine, who married a Mr. Burth and had a daughter Margaret Burth; (2) John, who was married and died about 1805; (3) George, who died before 1879; (4) Samuel, who died about 1828; (5) Peter; (6) Henry; (7) Mary; (8) Elizabeth, and (9) Anna. It is believed that the first eight children were children of his first wife, Mary Lewis Garner, whereas it is supposed that the ninth child, Anna, was the daughter of his second wife, Rachel Rinewalt Garner.

In 1826 John Garner, for his daughter Nancy (Anna), signed a release of legacy to Abraham Rinewalt, executor, of the estate of Christoph or Christian Rinewalt, whose will was probated in 1815. This shows that in 1826, Rachel Rinewalt, wife of John Garner, was deceased and also that Anna was a minor in 1826, her father being her legal representative. Recognizing only Anna, as the only child of John Garner and his wife, Rachel Rinewalt, it appears that this was the only Garner grandchild of

Christian Rinewalt. Anna must have been a number of years younger than all the rest of John Garner's children. It has been impossible to obtain any further data concerning this daughter, Anna, but presumably she was never married. [W. H. Reed.]

Jacob Rinewalt went to Mexico as a young man and married a young woman of the Spanish Nobility. Mr. Rinewalt joined the Catholic Church in order to be married by that ceremony. Her full name was said to have been Maria de Dolores Monterde y Tirado.

Mr. Rinewalt is said to have established the first stage routes between the towns of Mexico and Pueblo, finishing the same in 1823. He engaged in railroad enterprises later and is said to have em­ployed 500 men at one time in this construction. Mr. Rinewalt is reported to have accumulated a great deal of wealth and his wife was also a woman of wealth.

Mr. Rinewalt's father was very unwilling to have his son so far away from home, and was desirous of having him come North. The son was making plans to do so when he and his two children were stricken with cholera and all died.

Adam Rinewalt, Jr., a brother, corresponded with Jacob's widow, through an interpreter, for some time, but after a time the replies from Mexico ceased to come and it was reported that the widow had entered a Catholic Convent, and had given all her wealth, in addition to that given her by her husband to that institution.

A report is extant that Jacob Rinewalt was killed by a band of robbers, but the above account is given by Mrs. Charlotte Ingersoll, Williamsville, N. Y., who, as a girl, read some of the letters from the Spanish noblewoman.

Mrs. Ingersoll also has in her possession a photograph of Jacob Rinewalt and wife, as well as a photograph of their marriage license, which is printed in Spanish. [See Plate.]

Mrs. Ingersoll also has a diary which her father, Adam Rinewalt, wrote entitled "Excursions through the northern and western states." He started on the 14th of October, 1835, visiting his brother, George, in Indiana and made his first visit to Williamsville, New York. He reached Fort Wayne, Ind., the 22d of November. "From Wayne I traveled about 60 miles to Huntstown, a small village, and from there 2% miles southwest to brother George." The following day he and his brother George went to Indian­apolis, a distance of 35 miles.

The following verses were composed by Eliza D. Rinewalt (afterwards the wife of Dr. Jacob Reazor), about twenty years ago, on her father's family and transcribed for the Coventry friends, Jan. 15, 1861:

My father's in his seventieth year, These twenty years he could not hear; Although he hears no human voice, The Lord still makes his heart rejoice. My mother died when I was young; She felt that she was going home, And then it was her earnest prayer That she might meet her children there.

Adam Rinewalt, in his diary of his trip to visit his brother George, states that he reached Fort Wayne, Ind., Nov. 22, 1835; travelled 60 mi. to a small village called Huntstown, and from thence "23/ miles southwest to brother George's." Left an ophan at the age of two years, John Rinewalt, when old enough, was "bound out." He received very little schooling, learned the miller's trade and ran the "Moore Hall Mill," near Phoenix­ville, Pa., and another in Norristown, Pa.

In 1841 he removed to Illinois and long before any railroad crossed the state, he and his partner built a large stone mill to which people drove ox teams for 40 miles to have their grists ground. They laid out the town of Mt. Carroll, Ill., and established a school which is now (1919) named "THE FRANCES SHIMER SCHOOL." By indefatigable energy, Mr. Rinewalt succeeded in bringing to the town the first railroad in that section, of which he was at first a director and later a vice-president. Accomplishing what he ditl with the handicap of his early years indicates that John Rinewalt was a man of great force.

Chalmers Ingersoll was born in Westfield, N. Y., the son of New Englanders, his father dying while Chalmers was still a young boy. After living in Westfield and Brockport, N. Y., for several years, Mr. Ingersoll went to Greenfield, Mass., where he learned the printer's trade.

In 1856 he located in Freeport, Ill., and followed his trade as printer. Leaving Freeport, he went to Chicago and was employed by The Tribune when the Civil War broke out. He was one of the first to enlist in the army of the North, and served three years with Co. G, 8th Ill. Cavalry, and re-enlisted as a veteran when his first term of enlistment expired. After nearly four years of service, he was discharged on account of illness. Mr. Ingersoll participated in some of the fiercest engagements of the War. He was at Gaines' Mills through the Potomac campaign, in the battles of Fredericksburg, Antietam and Gettysburg, besides numerous smaller engagements.

In 1866 Mr. Ingersoll went to Beloit, Wis., and started the Beloit Free Press, but in 1872 sold the paper to engage in manufacturing. He was the first to put out the paper plates used so commonly by grocerymen. In 1882 he formed a partnership with H. F. Hobart and published the Daily Free Press, but Mr. Hobart retired soon after and Mr. Ingersoll continued the publication of the paper alone, until 1904, when M. C. Hanna of Milwaukee was admitted into partnership, and finally sold his interest in the Free Press to the "Free Press Publishing Co." in 1907.

For nearly 20 years, Mr. Ingersoll was postmaster at Beloit, having been first appointed by Presi­dent Hayes. Aside from the postmastership, Mr. Ingersoll held many political honors, but gave his efforts unselfishly for others. He served as Sergeant-at-Arms in the Wisconsin Senate from 1870 to 1880; often was a delegate to congressional and state conventions, and a member of Beloit Common Council.

It was stated at the time of his death that there was, in all probability, no Beloit man so widely known in the state or who had possessed so much influence in political matters as Mr. Ingersoll. All through his life he was the highest type of American politician.

Mr. Rinewalt was born in Williamsville, N. Y., where his parents were among the early settlers. He attended the district school and academy of his native town. At the age of sixteen he went to Beloit, Wis., where he learned the printer's trade, thus laying a practical foundation for the profession that was to be his life work. He returned to New York state in his twenty-first year, and secured a position with the Commercial Advertiser, Buffalo. He remained with them for nine years, when he established the Amherst Bee at Williamsville, which he has successfully conducted ever since.

Mr. Rinewalt was prominent in Williamsville not only as a newspaper man, but as a promoter of many commercial enterprises. He was among the first to urge the building of the Buffalo and Williams­ville electric railroad, holding the offices of director and secretary. He has been largely engaged in real estate transactions, and was connected with creamery and other business enterprises. No man in the community was more devoted to its interests. He concerned himself especially with the public schools of the town, the establishment of waterworks, and other movements tending to the advance­ment of Williamsville.

He was elected collector of Amherst in 1881, and declined a renomination for that office. For nine years he was a trustee of the village of Williamsville, and during five of those years he was president of the village. In 1886 he was elected a school trustee. He served continuously in that position, and was president of the board of education at the time of his death.

During President Harrison's administration, Mr. Rinewalt was postmaster of Williamsville. He was a representative man among his fellow-citizens who time and again displayed their appreciation of his services to the community, and their ^-confidence in his ability and character. She was a woman of brilliant intellect and was one of the community's most accomplished women. She was president of the Iris Club, and active worker in the Civic Club, Red Cross, First Baptist Church. She was beloved and esteemed by all who came within the circle of her acquaintance.
