Cem. George Drescher was the son of Christopher Drescher and was a brother to Anna Drescher Kriebel, wife of Melchior Kriebel [25-2].
George Drescher with his wife, three children and his sister, Anna, fled to Herrnhut, Feb. 28, 1730, and thence to America in 1734. They settled in Towamencin Twp., Pa. [Plate F XV.]
George Drescher was naturalized June 21, 1743.

John Coleman Avery was born at Groton, Ohio, and was previously married in Cincinnati to Nancy Satterly, daughter of Capt. Stephen and Margaret (Barron) Satterly. There was one child of this marriage: Charles L. Hommedieu, born Aug. 25, 1815. John C. Avery moved to Cincinnati in 1809. He was a lieutenant in the army of the Northwest in the war of 1812, after which he returned to Cincinnati and engaged in the Hardware business. Mr. Avery was elected Marshall of the City in 1828; later to the office of sheriff of Hamilton Co., to which position he was re-elected three times. During the latter part of his life, Mr. Avery was engaged in the real estate business. His widow died at College Hill, Ohio, Aug. 3, 1880. [The Groton-Avery Clan.]

William Ledyard Avery was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was married in Leavenworth, Kansas, to Johanna (Ummethun) Buddemeyer, widow of Louis H. Buddemeyer. He was graduated from Yale University in 1855, studied law, and was admitted to the bar of Cincinnati in 1857. Mr. Avery was commissioned by the Governor of Ohio as Captain of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry in Nov., 1862. In 1863, Mr. Avery was appointed by the President an aide-de-camp of the U. S. Volunteers, as major and aide-de-camp in 1864, and as brevet lieutenant colonel on Mar. 25, 1865. Lieut. Col. Avery participated in the battles of Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge, and those engagements which clustered about Mobile Bay and Mobile. He was mustered out of service on Aug. 29, 1865, and returned to the practice of law in Cincinnati. He served as judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Hamilton Co., Ohio, for three successive terms, from 1871 to 1884. Hon. William L. Avery died in Hawthorne, Ky., in 1898, and his wife died in Cincinnati in 1909. [For further details, see "The Groton-Avery Clan."]

Smith was for a number of years assistant editor of "The Continent," a weekly publication of the Presbyterian Church, and for part of 1917 was moderator of the Chicago presbytery. For several years he was a member of the faculty of the Presbyterian Training School, Chicago; and in 1918 was lecturer on Church Publicity at McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago. He is publicity adviser for the International Sunday School Association. Several years ago Mr. Smith wrote "Publicity and Progress" which was published by Doran.
Mr: Smith is now assistant publicity manager of the Presbyterian Church in the U. S. and has his office in the Witherspoon Building, Phila. Residence, Lansdowne, Pa. (1922.)

Coleman Avery was graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1902, with the degree of A. B. He also received the degree of LL.B. from the Cincinnati Law School in 1905. He was a member of the Executive Committee of "The Honest Elections Committee" of Cincinnati in 1902. On Jan. 1, 1909, Mr. Avery became assistant prosecuting attorney of Hamilton County, serving in that capacity until 1911. While in that office he took a prominent part in prosecutions for bribery and perjury, the result of a movement to cleanse the city and state of political bosses. From 1911 until 1914, he was a member and First Sergeant of Troop C, First Ohio Cavalry. He served as lecturer on Criminal Law and Municipal Corporations in the Y. M. C. A. night school from 1911 to 1916, and for a time was Professor of Law on the faculty of the Law School at Cincinnati. He also served as special Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio for war work in 1918, and was appointed by the Governor of Ohio as Judge of the Supreme Court of that state in June, 1920, serving till Dec., 1920. Coleman Avery has always allied himself with all progressive movements for clean politics, and holds many positions of honor and trust.
