On Apr. 19, 1730, they moved to Herrnhut; on June 16, 1731, they moved from Herrnhut to Berthelsdorf "Auf den Ober Hof." On Apr. 19, 1733, they left Berthelsdorf for Pa., arriving in Phila. on the Brigantine "Merchant," Sept. 18, 1733.

My father, George Scholtze, was born in 1764, and was 72 years old on Feb. 15, 1746. My mother, maiden name Hubner, was born in 1680).

"Drei davon handeln schon 1731/2 mit Saffron in America." [Regent, p 84 b.] (Three of the children deal in Saffron in America in 1731/2.)

Practically all the information concerning the family of George Scholtze, Sr., after their arrival in Pa., was obtained from the diaries of his son, David. His place of residence and burial are not known although it is likely that they in later life lived with their son, Melchior, on the tract bought by George and Melchior in Upper Hanover Twp., Montg. Co., Pa. [Plate D I]. It is surmised that George Schultz and wife, Anna, and their son, Melchior, are buried in unmarked graves on an unenclosed plot on this tract.

His son, George, who had preceded the family to Pa. by two years, was a merchant in Philadelphia at the time of the arrival of the father's family, and it is very likely that father and son lived together for the first few years, but where the father lived after the son moved to Maryland the Editor has been unable to determine.

[7-1] GEORGE SCHOLTZ [E 1], b Jan. 3, 1711; din 1779; s George and Anna (Hubner) Scholtz [7]; was the first Schwenkfelder to come to Pa., arriving in Phila. on the "Snow Lowther," Oct. 14, 1731. We are told that when George Scholtz started for Pa. his twin brother, Christopher, left for the East dies, which is the last we hear of him. Just why these twin brothers started out as they did, andwhy one went to the East Indies and the other to Pa. is a question that should be investigated.

For much of the data relating to these early Schultz families we are indebted to the David Schultz

Almanac Diaries, written by George's brother David [E 9], q.v.

The following family of George Scholtz is constructed from the evidence collected:

On Oct. 14, 1731, George Schatz subscribed to the Declaration of. Fidelity and Abjuration [Col Rec., Vol. III, p. 417.]

George Schultz' name was on "Payroll of a Detachment of the 6th Battalion of Berks Co. Militia on duty Guarding Prisoners of War from Reading to Philadelphia." [Pa. Arch., 2nd Ser., Vol. XIV., p 821.] Was this George Schultz a Schwenkfelder?

In an acknowledgment signed June 11, 1770, we find the following: "Elizabeth Shultz, wife of George Shultz, residing at Conegochighe in Maryland."

When George Scholtz signed the Oath of Allegiance he spelled his name "Scholtz" (q.v.), but in signing his will he wrote "Shultz"; thus showing the changes undergone in spelling. Most of his descendants also spell the name "Shultz", while most of the families in Pa. have retained the spelling "Schultz."

That George Scholtz was a merchant and was engaged in business in Phila., we know by the description given in deeds of land to himself and brother, David [vid. Homes and Burial Places], when in 1736, George Schultz of Phila., Merchant, and David Schultz of "New Hanover" acquired 260 acres of land. On Mar. 1, 1757, this plot was conveyed to their brother, Melchior, and in this transaction the brothers are described as follows: "George Scholtze, late of the city of Phila., Merchant now of Salisbury Hundred, Frederick Co., Maryland, and David Schultz of Upper Hanover, formerly though erroneously called "New Hanover." On June 11, 1770, Elizabeth, wife of George Scholtz of Coneoco-cheague, Maryland, released her right to the property, upon the payment to her of five pounds by Catherine Scholtz, widow of Melchior Schultz.

George Scholtz must have gone to Maryland prior to 1757, according to the above transaction, and according to entries made by David in his Almanac Diary. On Feb. 15, 1756, a letter was received by David from George, dated Dec. 26; on Jan. 16 and Feb. 16, he wrote answers to George at Conego-hick.

"Feb. 10, 1757, George my brother, came from Conigoshick."

"Mar. 4, my brother, George, set out for Conegoschick." On Mar. 1, 1759 and Oct. 29, 1768 he wrote letters to George in Caneogoshick.

In 1763, George Scholtz, a resident of Maryland, acquired 100 acres of land located a few miles west of Hagerstown, to which he added 33 acres in 1773, which he occupied the rest of his life. It is probable that he is buried in the private cemetery on this land near Hagerstown, although no stone marks his grave.

On June 10, 1763, George Shults of Frederick County, Md., gave a mortgage of 90 pounds to Melchor Wagener, Melchor Shults and Christopher Shults of Hereford Twp., Berks Co., Pa., and George Shults and David Shults of Upper Hanover Twp., Phila. Co. [H. 548.]

It is probable that George Scholtz married in Maryland; the first name of his wife was Elizabeth, but her last name has not been determined. George Schultz was naturalized Apr. 12, 1743, and died in 1779; and three of his children were married at that time. We know that he had four daughters, and two sons. No trace of the three daughters has been found, and the connection of the other three has not been absolutely established, although the evidence points the family to connection as stated above.

Elizabeth Scholtz, widow of George, m second time Martin Harry, as established by will.

[7-9]          4. Catharine, b Nov. 12, 1761; d Jan. 29, 1833; m George Mowrer (Maurer).

Melchior Scholtze came to Pa. in 1735, landing in Phila. on June 28, in the "Brigantine Mary of Phila." Melchior was left in Haarlem to attendto some business in 1734 when the "St. Andrew" left; he is said to have been a merchant in Haarlem. [Cf. Reise Beschreibung.] Melchior settled in Upper Hanover Twp., Pa., having bought 332 acres in 1751. [Plate D I.] There was some dispute about the land as his brother George came from Maryland in 1757 and settled his cause with Melchior. [Cf. Homes and Burial Places.] Melchior d in 1764 and is probably buried on his own land, near the Dr. J. G. Mensch Mill, Pennsburg, Pa. Melchior Scholtze died of injuries received by falling from his horse on Feb. 24.

"Nuptials Melchior S. fratris mei Jan. 4, 1757." (David Schultz Almanac.)

In a paper signed May 16, 1786, we find "Catarina Schultzin, relict, widow of Melchior Schultz; Adam Hillegass, tanner and Anna, his wife; Catharine Schultzin, Spinster; David Shultze, bachelor."

[7-3a] DAVID SCHOLTZ [E 9], b Sept. 13, 1717; d Apr. 25, 1797; s George and Anna (Hiibner) Scholtz [7]; m Oct. 29, 1745, by a Justice of the Peace to ANNA ROSINA BEER (BEYER) [E 186], b Aug. 13, 1720; d June 14, 1750; dau Abraham and Rosina (Yeakell Beer [184]. No issue.

David Scholtz came to Pa. in 1733 on the "Merchant," of London, arriving Sept. 18, 1733, with his father, George, and nine other Schwenkfelder immigrants (vid. Immigrant List), including Johann and Gottlob Klemm and the members of the Krauss family [11]. Nothing further is known concerning the Klemms.

Having been born in 1717, David Scholtz was 16 years of age at the time of his journey. He kept a diary of this journey which is known as the Reise Beschreibung [yid. Pa. Mag. of Hist. and Biog., Vol. X, p 167]; and it is from this diary as well as from the diaries kept by David Schultz in his Almanacs, a number of which are now in the Schw. Hist. Lib. at Pennsburg, Pa., in the Pennypacker Collection, that most of the data concerning the Schultz family was obtained.

Although David Scholtz wrote his name as above when he signed the Oath of Allegiance, he wrote it in various other ways during his life time and signed his will "David Schultze, Senior." (q.v.)

According to David's diary, thirteen persons left Berthelsdorf, Saxony, Sunday, Apr. 19, 1733, to journey to Pa. Included in this number were George Schultz (father), his wife, Anna, and son David; Melchior Krauss, his wife, Anna, and Susanna. Melchior Krauss, Sr., died suddenly on May 28 at Haarlem, and on the next day, May 29, the company was joined by John Klemm and five others.

David Schultz was naturalized Mar. 29, 1755.

How David Schultz obtained his education is not known but he and Rev. Christopher Schultz [E 70], his cousin, seem to have been two of the busiest and perhaps the most influential of the entire group of Schwenkfelder immigrants; both were 16 years of age at the time of their arrival, and both kept diaries of their journeys.

The entries in his diaries are made in English, German, and Latin.

That he and his brother George [E 1] must have had some means is shown that in 1736 David (then but 19 years of age) and his brother George, "Merchant" of Phila., bought 260 acres of land for 70 pounds [vid. Homes and Burial Places of Immigrants].

The next few years must have been spent in study during his spare hours, for we find MSS. in his own handwriting being copies of writings of a religious and devotional nature, and as early as 1743 we find him engaged in surveying and conveyancing, and for about fifty years thereafter we find the name of David Schultz attached to hundreds of drafts and surveys, conveyances, wills, and other legal papers. He must have retained copies of all his wills, agreements, surveys, and official writings, as hundreds of them have been located and are deposited in the S. H. L. at Pennsburg. He laid out boundary lines extending over what is now embraced by the counties of Northampton, Lehigh, Berks, and Chester.

"Hardly a road laid out during a period of fifty years in which our David Schultz had not been connected either as actual surveyor or scrivener. We question whether a single farm could be named of which he had not been asked to frame a draft. Nor does there appear a bond, agreement, or any instrument was necessary to pass which the ubiquitous Squire had not been present to witness, and which (his) hand had not drawn." [C. Z. Weiser.]

Tradition states that he wore tin boots while surveying.

That he prospered in his business is shown by the fact that in May, 1749, he bought 180 acres, 60 perches of land for 72 pounds, three shillings, lying in Upper Hanover Twp., Pa., on which the town of East Greenville now stands at about $1.06 an acre. [Plate C XXVI.] The next year a great sorrow befell David Schultz in the murder of his wife, Anna Rosina (vid. below), while David was away surveying. Mrs. Schultz is buried in the Cem. at New Goshenhoppen, near East Greenville, Pa. Her grave is close to the church and her tombstone has the following inscription:

"ANNA ROSINA SCHULTZIN

Murdered June 14, A.D., 1750.

Aged 29 years. Funeral text: Jeremiah 9:21."

David Schultz did not adhere to the Schwenkfelder faith after arrival in Pa., as he did not seem to be in full harmony with the views of their religious questions and doctrines. Doubtless he was influenced by the views of Dr. Melchior Hubner of Frederick Twp. who was known as a Restorationistan admirer of the English visionary Jane Leade, and an outspoken enemy of false spirituality. That he soon connected himself with the New Goshenhoppen Church is shown by the records and for many years his advice was sought and given during the early history of that institution. He is buried in the Cemetery adjoining the church, and his tombstone contains the simple inscription:

"DAVID SCHULTZ

died 1797

aged 79 years, 7 months."

ACCOUNT OF THE MURDER OF ROSINA BEYER SCHULTZ
(For full account vid. Pennsylvanische Berichte, by Sauer, 1750.)

(Translation)

During the past summer, Abraham Beer (Beyer), of Methacton, on his return from a journey to Rotterdam, took with him on the ship a couple of beggar-boys who bound themselves to serve seven years for their passage money; but after their arrival here they heard that a certain boy of their own age was obliged to serve only four years for his passage, or until he was twenty-one. Thus it happened that one of these boys, who was a Swiss, and who had an indolent disposition, did everything in a disgusted or spiteful manner.

However, Beyer's brother-in-law, David Schultz, hoped to win him over by kindness, and took the boy with his indenture, from Abraham Beyer. But since David Schultz was a land surveyor, and on this account was obliged to be away from home a great deal, on account of laying out roads, &c., his wife was obliged to look after the boy and keep him at work, and as the boy said, on two occasions she boxed his ears, and he therefore decided to get revenge.

During the night of June 14th, as he says, he entered her room through the window, took a long, pointed knife with the intention of stabbing her. But as he reached her bedside she moved, whereupon he went back till he thought she fell asleep, when he again returned, but as he approached her bed, she again turned over, and he again went back till he thought she was fast asleep. Thereupon, he stabbed her in the throat, near the gullet, through the large vein, the knife sinking about four inches deep, or deeper than the length of the blade. He then ran out of the house in his shirt and hid in a neighbor's haystack. Mrs. Schultz, however, ran up and down the stairs, but on account of the rapid loss of blood she fell on her face at the foot of the stairs, and died. After he was discovered the boy admitted everything as above related.

He was taken to Philadelphia and put in prison, where he must remain until the Supreme Court meets. His own confession states that he did it with premeditation.

He tells the story so that all may know it, and makes no excuse for doing it except for spite, because he was to work seven years for his passage money. He was only eighteen years of age, and had six years more to serve.

November 1, 1750.

On the 22d of the past month was held the Court of Oyer and Terminer, at which time Hans Ulrich Seiler, the former servant of David Schultz, who stabbed his mistress, was brought to trial. He was persuaded to deny his guilt, and did so at first; but when they produced his knife he admitted his guilt, but tried to excuse himself because she was a hard mistress and he had to serve so long a time for his passage. He stated that his indenture called for only six years, and not seven.

After he admitted the deed, and that he entered the room three times before he stabbed her, he was was told that since he killed her premeditatedly, his crime was too great to be excused, and the judgment was pronounced that since he had shed human blood, his blood must also be shed, and he was sentenced to. be hanged until dead.

CONCERNING DAVID SCHULTZ'S WIFE'S MURDER.

"The record of the conviction of John Ulrich Sailor, of Upper Hanover in Philadelphia County, Labourer, and Sentence of Death in consequence thereof pronounced against him by the Supreme Judges at a Court of Oyer and Terminer held at Philadelphia for the county of Philadelphia, on the twenty-second day of October last, having been certified by the Clerk of the Supreme Court the same was read, and in regard that the Crime was a most Cruel Murder committed against the Person of his Mistress, and that the Judges had said nothing in his Favour, Wednesday Seven-night was appointed for his Execution, of which the Secretary is to give Notice to the Sheriff and to the Criminal, and to prepare a Warrant for it." "This John Sites had a brother, Henry, who married Mrs. Maria Parker, a widow, my mother's sister. There was also a brother, Jake. John Sites' father may have been Henry, for it seems to have been a family name." (Mrs. Catherine Sites [7-50].)

Henry Shultz had a still house, and was accustomed to haul the whiskey from his distillery to Richmond. On one of these trips while he was driving a six horse team load of whiskey barrels, he accidentally fell off the wagon while in sight of his home, and died before assistance could reach him. His widow lived for many years after this accident; but this tragic death of her husband caused her to lose her mind. She died in Albermarle County, near Greenwood depot, at the home of her daughter, Margaret Dettor. [Mrs. Phoebe Miller.]

The Sites are nearly all dead, and they were not people to talk much about their ancestors, so I can not tell you whether John Sites' father was Henry and his mother Mary Schultz. Margaret seems to have been the oldest child, therefore John Sites must have married Mary Pinkstaff about 1809 or 1810.

"This John Sites, whom we called `grandpop,' had a brother Henry married to Maria Parker, a widow, my mother's sister. There was also a brother, Jake. John Sites' father may have been Henry, for it seems to have been a family name." [Mrs. Kate Sites, Cavetown, Md.-1920.]

Since there has been some confusion regarding the correct military record of Capt. Dettor in the Civil War, the following data furnished by Mrs. Frank Johnson of Louisa, Va., and. B. T. Dettor of Chattanooga, Tenn., is inserted.

CORRECT MILITARY RECORD OF CAPTAIN JOHN DETTOR.

To the Editor of The Times-Despatch,

Sir:

Permit me to correct your statement in your issue of the 23d inst to the effect that Captain Hawley became major of the Tenth Virginia Cavalry the last year of the war. When Colonel Caskie became colonel, Lieut. Hawley became captain of Co. A and remained so to the surrender.

When we left Petersburg, Robt. A. Caskie was Colonel W. B. Clement's lieut-colonel and J. Henry Dettor (Company F from Albemarle Co.), was major. The major was killed in the retreat and the regiment was captured near Amelia. Consequently no promotion could be made. I was lieut. in Co. K. Tenth Va. Cavalry, and served in West Va. also, being made lieut. just before the seven days battles before Richmond, and knew personally and intimately every officer in the regiment. This correction is due to the memory of Major Dettor and correct history.

  1. H. Turner, D. D. Ruxton, Maryland.

My Dear Madam:

Yours received and it gives me great pleasure to do or say anything I can which may be of use to the wife of Capt. J. Henry Dettor, Co. F., 10th Va. Cavalry, II. S. A. He always wrote or signed his name J. Henry Dettor. I knew him intimately as a fellow officer in the same regiment. He and I were rather companionable. He was a good fighter, an excellent officer, and had the good will and esteem of all in the regiment. He was promoted major of the regiment just about the time we left Petersburg after its evacuation. I spoke to him a few minutes before he was killed. It was I think just about the time—a little before or after the battle of Five Oaks. It is fifty years ago and some things have been forgotten.

I should like to know just where his body was found.

About a year ago there was a notice in the Times-Dispatch of Rd., of the death of Capt. Hawley, Co. "D" of our regiment. In this notice he was mentioned as major of the 10th Va. Cavalry. Although I did not know whether any of Major Dettor's friends were alive or might ever see it, I took occasion to write to the Dispatch and correct the error, telling the editor that Capt. Hawley was never major of the regiment, but that J. Henry Dettor was promoted to the office as I have stated. I did this in justice to the memory of Maj. Dettor.

They failed to send me a copy of my notice and so I did not know it had been published. I presume this is the notice to which you refer.

There were two lieutenants Martin in Co. F. Are they living? Yours is the first and only word I have had from the Co. in all these years, except a brief call I made on Capt. Cable in Staunton, a few years before his death. Capt. Dettor rode a sorrel horse with a blaze or bald face. Your mention of the horse recalls it to mind.

Sincerely yours,

  1. H. Turner, Lieut. Co. K.

10th Va. Reg.

Capt. or Maj. J. Henry Dettor, mustered in service, left home 27th of June 1861. Mustered in at Gawley Bridge; West Va. Served in battles in West Va. He was wounded at Charles City Court House, W. Va. Henry Lee was left to guard road during the battle around Trevilians. In the battle around Richmond a piece of shell passed through his saddle-bags and one piece went in front and skinned the horse's legs. He had several narrow escapes.

He was killed at Five Forks, Dinwiddie County, 1st day of April, 1865, nine days before the surrender. His body was afterward found by his father, Joseph Dettor, and carried to Greenwood, his old home, and buried. He turned back to save another company and his horse fell then ran off and he called to his boys to get his horse and then the

enemy closed in on them. W. F. Dettor, his brother, got his horse and led it out.                                                                                      [Mrs. Frank Johnson].

John Henry Dettor Captain of Company F., Tenth Virginia Cavalry, was killed at "FIVE FORKS," Dinwiddie County, Va., April 1st, 1865, age 30 years.

After eight months of suspense alternating between hope and fear, at times his parents and friends hearing that he was certainly alive, at other times that he was killed, his remains were found by his father, December 3rd, carried to his home in this county, near Greenwood Depot, where his funeral was preached (Dec. 9th) by the writer, to a large and attentive audience, from Romans, 8th chapter and 23d verse, and then buried with Masonic honors by King Solomon Lodge, No. 194, of which he was a member.

Thus has passed away from earth one of the noble brave around whose name the evergreen Acacia will ever twine.

He was a Christian, devoted to the Master, who has called him away from the Church militant to the Church triumphant in Heaven, where the clarion notes of the bugle will never summons "to arms" and no crimson current flow amidst the roar of artillery, the gleam of the sabre, and the sharp crack of the rifle.

As a captain he was exceedingly popular with his superior officers, and with his company, including among its members some of Albemarle's bravest sons.

As a son he was affectionate and obedient; as a husband and father kind, attentive and devoted; as a brother generous and true.

A warm-hearted Mason, a genial companion, a NOBLE MAN.                                                                                     C. C. V.

MET AGAIN AFTER FIFTY YEARS.

At Gettysburg Dr. A. C. Smith, of Gordonsville, Va. , remarked to some comrades that he would like to find the Federal soldier, if alive and there, who gave him, when wounded desperately at the Bloody Angle, lying over the stone wall, a drink of water out of his canteen. One who listened to him heard later of a Federal soldier who was looking for a Confederate, if there, to whom he had given a drink of water at the Angle.

When Dr. Smith marched with his comrades of Pickett's Division, on the fiftieth anniversary to the hour of the great Pickett charge and climbed over the fence near the top of Cemetery Ridge, he stood again at the Angle, and soon both men were descried and brought together. It was hard for the men of ripened years to recognize the young soldier features of fifty years ago. They talked over the circumstances and became satisfied that they were the two who met thus on the battlefield. The Federal was Mr. Hamilton, of Philadelphia, a fine man, a Mason, and a man of cordial brotherly heart. He bears the long scar on his cheek of a bad wound. They remained together for some time, took each other's address, clinked together glasses of lemonade, and in parting repeated with manly firmness and without affectation, the words simply spoken so many times on that historic ground, "Well, if we never meet again on earth, I hope we shall meet in Heaven." [From Newspaper clipping furnished by Margaret Lee Dettor Johnson, Louisa, Va.]

One of the many battles in the Civil War in which Dr. Smith fought was that of Gettysburg. He participated in Pickett's charge in the battle of Gettysburg, in the 56th Regiment, Garnett's Brigade, Pickett's Division. While marching forward, a bullet struck his gun barrel, splitting his thumb. Powder got into the wound, making it quite painful for him to fire the gun. He was among those who captured the stone wall at the Bloody Angle. They fired there one or two rounds, and then orders were given to advance over the wall to seize the cannon. He climbed the wall and was shot, seemingly by a flanking force below him on the left. One bullet entered his shoulder, passed through his body and out about the collar bone, and another the back of his knee, going through so that, being just beneath the skin in front, it popped out when the surgeon cut. He fell over on the upper side of the wall, and lay on the field several days. General Armstead jumped over his body when he climbed the wall. [Charles C. Anderson].

Dr. Smith said the wound in the thumb gave him more trouble and he suffered more from that wound than from his other wounds. He lay on or near the battlefield twenty-one days; no attention was given him at first as they were sure he would die in a few moments, but finally they fed him and took him up and put him in a wagon and carried him away for treatment. The shaking was agony, I have heard him say. [Mrs. Frank Johnson.]
