Christopher Kriebel came to Pa. in 1734 with his parents and settled in Lower Salford Twp. He was naturalized Sept. 24, 1745: both Christopher and wife are buried in Salford Schw. Cem.
Rev. Christopher Kriebel inherited his father's farm in 1741, but did not receive his conveyances until June, 1750. On May 6, 1784, he sold 125% acres of his farm to his son Jeremiah for 700 pounds in specie. He also owned other land which was bought and sold at various times.
Having been chosen teacher of the young, for more than thirty years (1764-1797), Rev. Kriebel met his class in Bible study every two weeks. He encouraged his pupils to write out comments on the assigned topics or scripture passages. In this way he spent. eight years studying the Gospel of St. John, recording his own questions and answers which cover more than one thousand pages of manuscript. In the same manner he studied other parts of the Bible, and penned a number of volumes so systematically that a study of four volumes shows a variation of not more than two lines to a page.
In 1782 he was elected a minister of the Schwenkfelder Society, and served faithfully until 1796, when he asked to be relieved and was succeeded by Rev. Christopher Hoffman.
He was an important factor in the organization of the Church in 1782. Many of his sermons are preserved as well as eight hymns which he composed and published in 1762. His home was often used as a meeting place for divine worship as well as for conferences for the welfare of the Sehwenkfelder body.
Christopher Kriebel's Letter Book, termed by the author a "Schrifften Samnalung," is a collection of more than sixty different letters copied from originals from the "Heintze Correspondence" which was carried on between the Schwenkfelders who came to Pa. in 1734 and those of the same faith who remained behind in Silesia. The principal correspondents were Christopher Kriebel and Christopher Schultz of Pennsylvania on the one hand, and Carl Ehrenfried Heintze of Silesia on the other. This book contains 368 pages and comprises more than 60 letters. Rev. Kriebel began compiling them in 1765 and completed the task in 1792 at the age of seventy-two. The author states that his object in compiling this collection was that posterity might read them and profit thereby.
The entire book is written in German manuscript in very small type, and closely written, but of great clearness and beauty. These letters are a mine of information on both the religious conditions existing in Pa. and Silesia and also as regards the social conditions prevailing. When in later life Heintze's faith began to waver, both Christophers wrote him such impressive and overwhelming arguments, urging him to remain steadfast, that the former in his reply told them that the next time they wrote they should be brief so that the letters would not require so much postage. In one of these letters, dated 1769, Christopher Kriebel writes:
(Translation)
"We in Coschehoppe, Shippach and Towamencin have our own burying grounds at each place. Many have burying grounds on their own land for their families. Others who live a considerable distance away have buried their dead in burying grounds of people who are not of our faith, since those of quite different religious views have buried there, for the earth is quite common to such use in our land. We also allow our neighbors who live near us, and are of different religious views, to bury in our grounds." [Schwenkfelders in Pa.- Kriebel.]
In 1767, Christopher Kriebel served in his township as Overseer of the Poor, and he was one of the four men appointed by Dr. Abraham Wagner to distribute one-third of his estate to the poor.
In 1764, when the Schwenkfelder Schools were established, Christopher Kriebel contributed thirty pounds to their support, and in 1756 he contributed to a fund of 260 pounds raised in Salford Twp. by the Friendly Association which tried to preserve peace among the Indians on the frontier during the French and Indian War.
Rev. Christopher Kriebel led a busy and active life, dying the last day of the 18th century. His tombstone in Salford Cemetery has the inscription, "Christopher Kribel, der Lehrer der Schwenkfelder Gemeinde." (Translation)-Christopher Kriebel, the teacher of the Schwenkfelder Congregation. In 1822, Dr. Christopher Kriebel attended a medical convention at Havre-de-Grace, Maryland, and while there was stricken with yellow fever and died suddenly. He was buried in Havre-de-Grace. Tradition says when he left for the convention Dr. Kriebel took with him quite a large sum of money, but after his death it could not be found.
Upon the receipt of the news of Dr. Kriebel's death, Mrs. Kriebel's father, Rev. Melchior Schultz, went to Havre-de-Grace, located his grave and claimed his effects, which filled two trunks. He is reported to have been a very stout man and not in good health when he left for the Convention. He lived on Filbert St., Phila.
The late Rev. Dr. George K. Meschter of Worcester frequently stated he had read of Dr. Kriebel's success as a physician. Oil portraits, painted on wood, of Dr. Christopher. Kriebel and wife are preserved in the S. H. L. at Pennsburg, Pa., having been presented by Mrs. Amanda Kriebel Seibert,
Worcester, Pa., in whose bedroom they were preserved for almost a century. We are also indebted to Mrs. Seibert for the above information as well as for the original letter sent from Havre-de-Grace announcing the death of Dr. Kriebel. Henry Kriebel, son of Israel, born Mar. 25, 1828, in Colebrookdale Twp., Berks Co., Pa., came with his parents to what is now Kriebel's Mill in Hereford, when a small boy. He lived the remainder of his life there and died Nov. 10, 1893.
As a young man he became a miller and conducted an oil mill and grist mill until his death, assuming charge of the mill when his father died. At that time 125 acres of good land were connected with the mill property and this was divided into two tracts. After the death of Henry Kriebel in 1893, the mill and 25 acres were transferred to the son, Lewis G., and the rest to another son, Calvin G.
Henry Kriebel manufactured much linseed oil, employing five or six persons. The flax was hauled from Upper Berks and Lehigh Counties in large Conestoga wagons, with four horses. The oil was sold in the surrounding country and was used in the mixture of paints.
The mill was operated by water power, being located on the north branch of the Perkiomen Creek, and it was the last oil mill in the township.
Mr. Kriebel was an adherent of the Schwenkfelder Church and is buried in the Washington Meeting Cemetery.
He was active in township politics for more than a quarter of a century. He was school director, assistant township assessor, auditor, and at one time the candidate of his party for county treasurer.

Howard Wiegner Kriebel was born in Hereford Twp., Berks Co., Pa.; he was educated in the public schools of his native twp., at the Keystone State Normal School, Kutztown, Pa. (graduating in 1876), and at Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio.
He taught in the public schools of his native twp. and at Perkiomen Seminary, Pennsburg, Pa., which institution he helped to revive, where he served also as bookkeeper, secretary and trustee. He resigned from this position to write "The Schwenkfelders in Pennsylvania," an historical sketch published in 1904 by the Pennsylvania German Society.
Mr. Kriebel was the publisher of the "Pennsylvania German," (from 1906-1914), an illustrated monthly magazine devoted to the biography, history, folklore, literature, and general interests of German and Swiss settlers in Pa., and other states, and•their descendants.
For a time Mr. Kriebel served as minister of the Society of Schwenkfelders, and for several years served as Secretary of the Conference of the Society. He was also one of the original members of the Board of Publication of the Schwenkfelder Church, serving as its Secretary for a number of years.
To Mr. Kriebel belongs the credit of originating numerous movements in the "Society of Schwenk-felders."
He first started the collection of valuable books and manuscripts in the Schwenkfelder families, purchasing many at public sales in order to preserve them, keeping them in his home until the present Historical Library Building was erected at Pennsburg, when he generously donated his valuable collection to the Library.
He was the first to suggest the idea of erecting a permanent building for the preservation of the Schwenkfelder books and manuscripts, and for twenty years kept agitating the idea, before it was finally accomplished.
For more than forty years Mr. Kriebel has been collecting data on the history of the Schwenk-felders, and he is the best informed man in the country today on the early history of the activities of the Schwenkfelders, after their arrival in Pennsylvania. All data collected by Mr. Kriebel during these many years was very kindly put at the disposal of the Editor of this work, and the Editor hereby wishes to acknowledge his hearty gratitude to Mr. Kriebel for his generosity and willingness to cooperate in every way to make this record as complete and comprehensive as possible. Most of the field work and research work done to assemble the material for this book was done by Mr. Kriebel under the direction of the Editor, and had it not been for Mr. Kriebel's intuitive instinct for discovering clues to widely scattered families and his dogged persistence in following out these clues it would not have been possible to locate such a large number of families as are included in this book.
For the many hours of gratuitous service that Mr. Kriebel has rendered the Schwenkfelder Institutions, and for the many ideas originated by him for the development of these institutions, the Schwenkfelders owe Mr. Kriebel a debt they never can pay.

His father dying when the boy was but thirteen years of age, many responsibilities were placed upon Dr. Kriebel and his elder brother who was but two years his senior. The full management of the farm practically rested on the shoulders of these two boys for several years. However, Dr. Kriebel managed to attend the public schools of his native twp., studying diligently at home when he was not permitted to attend school, and was able in a few years to pass an examination for a teacher's certificate, which then permitted him to teach in the public schools of the county. In this way he spent three years in teaching, and then in 1883 he entered Oberlin Academy, Oberlin, Ohio, where he remained for two years preparing for college.
Not having any financial assistance Dr. Kriebel was obliged to pay his own way through the Academy and College and he did this by accepting all kinds of honest employment, during his college course and during the summer vacations—working on the farm, selling books or stereoscopic views or teaching. Thus by great diligence and conscientious effort he was able to work his own way through Oberlin College, and was graduated in 1889 with the degree of A.B.
It was during his college career that Dr. Kriebel was visited by a committee of the Schwenkfelder Church of the Upper District, for the purpose of asking him to become the minister of their churches, as Rev. Joshua Schultz who was then pastor of this District was growing old and in very poor health, so that it was thought that someone should be procured to assist him and be able to take his place when he became entirely incapacitated. The committee was induced to take this trip because in his younger days in connection with the Sunday Schools of the Upper District, Dr. Kriebel had always taken an active part, was a faithful worker, and an earnest speaker. All these qualities seemed to indicate that he would make an acceptable minister. When the committee waited upon Dr. Kriebel and presented all aspects of the situation to him, he replied:
"I know that I can teach, but I do not know that I shall be a success as a preacher, and I am not fitted to be a farmer." However, having his mind turned in the direction of the ministry, upon his graduation from the college department he entered Oberlin Theological Seminary, spending two years in study for the ministry and was given the degree of A.M. in 1892. In 1891 Dr. Kriebel was married to Miss Corinne Miller, who also was graduated from Oberlin College in 1886. The following year they took a trip abroad where Dr. Kriebel finished his third year of theological work in the University of Berlin.
In the meantime the Schwenkfelder Churches of the Upper District, realizing that if they desired to have a pastor who would embody all the requisites which they desired to have, they would have to provide further means of support than had previously been given their pastors, as prior to this time, none of the ministers of the Church were paid for their services, but obtained their living from their daily occupations. At the same time there seemed to be a growing demand for a school in the community which would enable the boys and girls of that vicinity to obtain further education than was given in the public schools at that time. The outgrowth of this thought was the purchasing of Perkio-men Seminary, by the Schwenkfelder Church and the electing of Oscar S. Kriebel as the principal and also the pastor of the Upper District Churches, which at that time included three churches, or meeting houses, viz.: Washington, Hosensack, and Kraussdale. When Dr. and Mrs. Kriebel returned from abroad in 1892, Dr. Kriebel was installed as Pastor of the Upper District and as Principal of Perkiomen Seminary. [For the history of Perkiomen Seminary, see page 29.]
The growth and development of the Schwenkfelder congregation dates from this time, for with the enthusiasm and optimism which has pervaded Dr. Kriebel's career, changes and expansions have taken place within the Schwenkfelder denomination which have meant much progress and resulted in the present achievements. In all of these movements Dr. Kriebel has been the leader. The organization of the Mission Board, the expansion of mission work, the organization and incorporation of the Board of Publication for the monumental task of publishing the Corpus Schwenckfeldianorum, and the development of Perkiomen School are all achievements in which Dr. Kriebel has been the leading figure. As a result of his leadership the new Palm Schwenkfelder Church was dedicated September 24, 1911, with its entire cost of more than 840,000.00 entirely pledged. This church edifice is located in precisely the geographic center of what is known as the Upper District, and since its erection the three separate church buildings at Hosensack, Washington, and Kraussdale, have been abandoned excepting for funeral purposes. The cemeteries are still retained and kept in good repair. The building at Washington has been torn down and a suitable marker erected on the site where the former pulpit stood. The cemetery has been enclosed with a handsome stone wall. The new building at Palm is constructed of stone, and the main timbers on the inside were cut from the trees, which formerly stood in the yard of the Washington Schwenkfelder Church. A handsome pipe organ of superior quality is also one of several outstanding features of this Church. This was the first Schwenkfelder Church erected in which a pipe organ was installed. The Palm Church is a memorial to the services of Dr. 0. S. Kriebel as Pastor. On October 27, 1917, the twenty-fifth anniversary of the ordination of Dr. Kriebel to the Christian ministry was held in this Palm Church. The exercises were largely attended by friends and members from far and near and were a memorable event for the Schwenkfelder Church of the Upper District.
Dr. Kriebel has written and published a number of treatises, some of which are "An Outline of the Study of The Acts, The Epistles, and Revelations;" "Sanctification versus Christian Perfection;" "Conversion and Religious Experience," etc. In recognition of these works, Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, conferred upon Dr. Kriebel the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity in 1907.
During the World War, Dr. Kriebel was appointed fuel administrator of Montgomery County, and also a member of the food commission. He served as chairman of various committees in the upper end of the 'county until the relinquishment of government control after the close of the war.
Dr. Kriebel's two monuments are the Perkiomen School and the Palm Church. His untiring efforts have made Perkiomen School one of the leaders among preparatory schools. He has helped many young people to get an education; he has been instrumental in securing a large number of young men to enter the Christian ministry of their various denominations; as a matter of fact with the exception of Rev. Edwin S. Anders it was through Dr. Kriebel's encouragement that all the other ministers of the Schwenkfelder denomination today were induced to study for the ministry.
It can truly be said that Dr. Kriebel has been the leader of the Schwenkfelder Church during the last thirty years; he has wielded an influence over the people and community that is far reaching. When one looks back and notes the activities that have been started and achieved during the past thirty years one can trace in their movements the hand of Dr. 0. S. Kriebel, so that it can be said with truth, that the opening of Perkiomen Seminary, by the Schwenkfelders, marked the Renaissance of the Schwenkfelder Church.

Jesse S. Krieble was born in Worcester, Montg. Co., Pa., Oct. 11, 1842. He attended the public schools of his twp. where he was taught by George Weber who instructed him in addition to the usual branches in mensuration, geometry, trigonometry and surveying. Later he attended Freeland Seminary and North Wales Academy. After teaching school for several years in Worcester and Gwynedd twps. he took up farming as his occupation. He, however, was a public spirited citizen of many interests and devoted much of his time to the upbuilding and advancement of his community. He was particularly interested in education and served for 27 years as a school director of Worcester Twp., acting as the President of the board for about 15 years. He also helped to organize Perkiomen Seminary at Pennsburg which was taken over by the Schwenkfelder church in 1892, acting as a trustee the rest of his life.
As a farmer he believed in united action as the only way that farmers could either sell or buy their commodities satisfactorily. He helped to organize the "Farmers' Creamery Association" of Worcester and the Worcester "Farmers' Union," and served as president of both associations for many years.
He also took an active interest in financial and political affairs. When the North Wales Bank was organized he became a charter member of the board and served as long as he lived. As a protest against the Quay regime in 1900, he consented to become a candidate of the independents for the State Assembly, but failed of election.
He was a life long and active member of the Schwenkfelder church, serving it as Secretary of the General Conference and as superintendent of the primary department of the Towamencin Sunday school for many years.
He died March 21st, 1915, aged 72 years, 5 months, and 10 days and was buried in the Towamencin Schw. Cem.
