From a German manuscript written in 1792, found in the possession of Mrs. Abraham Oberholtzer, Worcester, Pa., in 1920, and deposited in S. H. L., we learn the following :—
The maiden name of the wife of George Hartranft was Maria Elisabeth Schmiedt, dau of Johannes Schmiedt and his wife, Anna Catharine. She was born in Ober-Setzen, Nassau Siegen, Germany, in 1727. Sponsors at her baptism were Martin and Maria Elisabeth Neiss. She attended school in her
native village, learning to read and write, and when grown took communion. She came to Pa. with her
uncle, and served as a Redemptioner three years with Melchior Kriebel, marrying George Hartranft
thereafter. They lived together six years when he died. Two daughters were born to them. Remain-
ing a widow one and a half years, she then married Johann Peter Miller with whom she lived fifteen
years when he too died; a daughter was born to them but died early. After her second husband’s death
she remained a widow and by July 15, 1792, she had been a widow fifteen years.
J. F. Hartranft’s notes state Rosina was born in 1758, and that wife of George Hartranft died Oct.
8, 1797. [S. H. L.]
