The Seltzers came to this country from Seltzer’s Springs, in the Duchy of Nassau, Germany, which was their family seat. Heinrich von Seltzer seems to have been the ancestor of the family, but it does not appear that he ever left Germany. His son, Mathias, came to this country and settled in what is now East Hanover Twp., Lebanon Co., about 1728, buying a large grant of land from Casper Wistar of; Phila., who had purchased the land directly from Thomas Penn, one of the proprietors of the Colony at that time. Michael Seltzer (apparently a son of Mathias) was born about 1740; this Michael was married to Barbara Jaffery (or Caffery) and a son was born to this union on July 10, 1776, named Jacob. Jacob married Eleanor Steitz Clarke on Feb. 21, 1804. This Eleanor Clarke was born Dec. 30, 1783, and was the daughter of Benjamin Clarke and his wife, Elizabeth Steitz. Elizabeth Steitz was the daughter of George Steitz who founded and laid out the City of Lebanon about 1756. George Steitz 2 brought Benjamin Clarke, a surveyor, to Lebanon Co. to lay out the town of Lebanon for him. Ben- g jamin Clarke then married George Steitz’s daughter and bought a place just across the creek from the old Seltzer homestead, which resulted in the marriage of his daughter Eleanor to Jacob Seltzer. Jacob Seltzer, Sr., had only two sons. The eldest was named John Clarke Seltzer, born Jan. 1, 1808; died Feb. 19, 1884; married Elizabeth Faber, May 18, 1834. To this union was born only one son, Colonel A. Frank Seltzer, born Nov. 20, 1837; died June 12, 1917, leaving no issue. He was a colonel in the Civil War, and was a lawyer by profession. He was a member of the bar, in active practice for fifty-two years, having been admitted to the bar in 1865 and practiced up until the date of his death.

The other son of Jacob Seltzer, Sr., was the Jacob Clarke Seltzer, who married Elizabeth Anne Gring, daughter of Rev. John Gring. [Clarke M. Selizer.]
