History Nebraska Bristow, Nebraska

Bristow, Nebraska

Bristow is a small village in the Ponca Creek valley between Lynch and Spencer. It began as a homestead-era post office in 1890 and became a railroad town in 1902, with strong Swedish church roots in the country around it.

A Post Office in a Store

Bristow began before the town did. Soon after the land opened in 1890, a small store just west of the present town became a post office, and its postmaster named it for Benjamin H. Bristow, who had been Secretary of the Treasury under President Ulysses S. Grant. Mail came by way of Niobrara, and freight was hauled overland from steamboats that landed on the Missouri.

Homesteaders found it a hard place to start. A flood in 1891 cut the road to Niobrara, and supplies had to come from Fort Randall instead. The first school was a sod building, later replaced by a frame one. Doctors were few, and one pioneer physician who homesteaded south of Rosedale was known for taking his pay in farm produce when families had no cash to spare.

Swedish Churches on the Prairie

Many of the families who settled north of Bristow were Swedish, and their churches became the backbone of the community. The Rosedale Evangelical Covenant congregation was organized in 1891 and built its first church in 1899. A Lutheran congregation of the Swedish-American Augustana Synod was founded five miles north in 1894; it later built a brick church in Bristow in 1920 and, after joining with the Anoka and Baker congregations, became Trinity Lutheran. A Methodist Sunday school started in 1902 and built a church in 1907, and a Baptist church, now gone, was the first in town.

The little settlement of Rosedale, north of Bristow, had its own school by the fall of 1891, but it faded after rural mail delivery from Spencer began in 1905. Its church and cemetery remain.

The Railroad Town

The present town was laid out in 1902 when the railroad came up the Ponca Creek valley. The company bought land for a depot, section house and stockyards, and opened a gravel pit with its own spur track. Freight wagons from the river landings were no longer needed. Bristow soon had general stores, a bank, a creamery and cheese factory, a pop factory, a photo gallery and its own newspaper, the Bristow Boomer.

A cloudburst in 1905 flooded Main Street and drove families from their homes, but the town kept growing. A two-story schoolhouse was built in 1913, a town band played in the 1910s, and Bristow fielded a strong baseball team in 1912. By the 1920 census the village had 255 people. Baseball stayed popular, and in the 1930s Bristow played in a Boyd County league against teams from the neighboring towns.

Bristow Today

Like its neighbors, Bristow grew smaller as farms consolidated. Its high school closed in 1960, when the district merged with Lynch six miles away, and the area is now served by Boyd County Public Schools. The churches carried on, though: the Lutheran congregation marked its 90th anniversary in 1984, and the Methodists, part of the United Methodist Church since 1968, held a service in 1981 to honor their 75-year-old cornerstone. An American Legion post, an extension club and a Lions Club have kept community life going. The 2020 census counted 70 people. The Bristow Cemetery, the Trinity Lutheran cemetery north of town and the Rosedale Covenant cemetery hold many of the area's homesteading families.
